In the early morning hours of July 30, 2012, at approximately 1:23 a.m., a deputy with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Foothills District observed a suspicious vehicle at the intersection of Orange Grove Road and La Canada Road. The deputy followed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Oracle Road and Rudasill Road, after he observed a traffic violation. The suspect vehicle, a Toyota Camry, then suddenly sped away from the stop and a pursuit was initiated. During the pursuit, deputies received information that the car was reported stolen out of the Tucson Police Department. The suspect drove at extreme speeds, and out of safety concerns deputies on the ground terminated the pursuit. The Sheriff’s Department Air Unit took over and continued to follow the passenger car. Eventually, it was observed driving into a hotel complex at 6201 N. Oracle Road. Witnesses pointed deputies to a particular room where they had seen the driver of the car run into. Adjacent hotel rooms were evacuated. Detectives of the Sheriff’s Auto Theft Unit also responded to the scene and obtained a search warrant for the hotel room. As there was no response from inside the hotel room, deputies forced entry. The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. He was identified as 19-year-old Brian Altland (DOB 08/10/92) and arrested on charges of Possession of Burglary Tools, Theft of Means of Transportation, Unlawful Flight from Law Enforcement, as well as three separate warrants. He was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center. The investigation continues.
