Sent on 12/23/2014 7:33:25 PM

On December 23, 2014, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Sheriff’s Department Crimes Against Children Unit responded to the 7400 block of North Desert Post Road to serve a search warrant reference Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. The detectives were there to search for physical and technological evidence to further their investigation. When the detectives arrived they learned the 46-year-old suspect, identified as Roy Renteria was locked in his room refusing to come out. His mother, who was removed from the residence, advised he had knives and swords in his room. Detectives tried talking to Mr. Renteria in an attempt to have him leave the room but he refused. He stated he had a gun and was not coming out. Due to concerns for the subject’s safety and his refusal to comply, a Pima Regional SWAT Team response was requested. When Pima Regional SWAT arrived, negotiators immediately took over communication with Mr. Renteria. He continued to refuse to exit the room. The robot, equipped with a camera, was deployed to monitor Mr. Renteria’s movements. As time progressed Mr. Renteria became increasingly lethargic. It was determined an entry needed to be made into the room due to his deteriorating condition. SWAT Team members had to remove a large amount of debris Mr. Renteria used as a barricade before he could be reached. Mr. Renteria was quickly removed from the room and taken to paramedics who were waiting nearby. They provided life saving measures to Mr. Renteria but were unable to revive him. Mr. Renteria was pronounced deceased at approximately 2:10 p.m. The Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death of Mr. Renteria. The cause of death is pending a forensic medical examination.
