This morning, at approximately 6:30 a.m., detectives with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Robbery/Assault Unit, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and officers and detectives with the Tucson Police Department (TPD) arrested a serial bank robber. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Elias Freig, was taken into custody at his residence in the 9400 block of North Sammy Avenue. The collaborative investigation covered three bank robberies committed within the jurisdiction of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, two in the Phoenix area and one incident that occurred within Tucson city limits. The first documented case in Pima County was reported on December 23, 2011 at the Chase Bank at 8360 North Thornydale Road. Evidence collected at several scenes tied the suspect to the robberies. With the help from agents with the FBI and in cooperation with TPD, the suspect’s identity was confirmed and his location established. This morning, Freig was located at the address mentioned above and safely taken into custody. He will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center for suspicion of his involvement in multiple bank robberies.
