August 17, 2016: Yesterday at approximately 7:20 p.m., San Xavier District deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Floyd Street and Leonard Avenue. It was reported that a man was taking pictures of children and trying to lure them to his vehicle. Deputy Koby Knodle was the first deputy in the area and quickly located a vehicle that matched the description provided by the reportee. Deputy Knodle attempted a traffic stop; however, the vehicle did not immediately stop. The vehicle eventually stopped in a residential driveway. The driver, 24-year-old Marcos Antonio Gastelum, immediately exited his car and became physically combative with Deputy Knodle. A fight ensued which lead to Deputy Knodle shooting Mr. Gastelum. Mr. Gastelum was transported to Banner University Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased. Deputy Knodle was transported for multiple lacerations to his face and head and has been released from the hospital. This is an on-going investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.
