What do you do with your old medication? It has been estimated that nationwide as much as a third of the dispensed medication goes unused. More than half of us dispose of unused pharmaceuticals in the trash. Others flush them down the toilet where they contaminate the waterways. The improper disposal of these medications, can lead to potentially 200 million pounds of pharmaceuticals that could adversely affect the environment. The Sheriff’s Department periodically provides opportunities for the proper disposal of unused and/or expired prescription drugs through its Dispose-A-Med program. On Saturday, June 1st 2013, the collection point will be located at 7575 E. Speedway Blvd, off of Prudence Rd. Anyone can drop off their prescription and non-prescription medication from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Prescription and over-the-counter tablets, capsules, liquids and creams will be collected. Metal or glass inhalation aerosol bottles, syringes and epi-pens will not be accepted. For safety and confidentiality reasons, any items turned over for collection cannot be returned. We cannot accept drugs from commercial organizations. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
