On May 23, 2013, at approximately 3:30 am, officers with the Tucson Police Department responded to West Irvington Road & South Mission Road reference a motor vehicle collision. During the course of their investigation they found that the accident actually took place in the jurisdiction of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and turned over the investigation. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene and found that a 64-year-old man by the name of John Akers was pronounced deceased on scene. They also found that Mr. Akers was traveling northbound on Mission Road. Upon entering the intersection at Irvington Road, he was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle left the scene before authorities arrived, but witnesses were able to give officers a good description. Deputies later found a car that had sustained damage consistent with witness descriptions. The investigators have reason to believe that alcohol was a factor in this collision. Through further investigation the Sheriff’s Department’s Traffic Unit identified a possible second suspect in reference to this morning’s fatal traffic collision. The Sheriff’s Department is working with the County Attorney to file appropriate charges for the two individuals. The investigation continues.
