On September 21, 2013, at approximately 10:46 p.m., Rincon District deputies responded to Redington Road reference a rescue near Chiva Falls. While en route, they were advised that a family of six were off-roading in the area when their vehicle encountered mechanical issues. The vehicle caught fire and a 29-year-old female sustained burns to her face and arms. No one else was injured. When deputies arrived at the trail head they met with Rural Metro Fire Department. They were advised the trail that led to the family‘s location was difficult to access due to recent heavy rain. The Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Unit was requested to respond. Search and Rescue and Rural Metro Fire personnel were able to locate the injured female with the assistance of a Life Net helicopter. The Life Net helicopter was unable to land due to the terrain and requested the Sheriffs Air Unit to assist. When the Sheriff’s Department helicopter arrived, a rescue deputy and stretcher were lowered utilizing the hoist. The injured female was secured on the stretcher, placed in a Baumann Bag and lifted to the helicopter. Once the injured female was secured on the helicopter, she was flown to a nearby landing zone. When the Sheriff’s Department helicopter arrived at the landing zone, the female was transferred to the Life Net helicopter. She was then transported to a local hospital for treatment. The injured female’s family members were safely taken out of the area.
