There have recently been tremendous strides taken at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex. The Sheriff’s Department Corrections Bureau is constantly striving to be on the cutting edge of technology and is a model for corrections facilities throughout the nation. The Corrections Bureau now provides multiple means for friends and family to stay in touch with their incarcerated loved ones, accommodating the average American’s hectic schedule and busy life. Utilizing their tablets, detainees have the opportunity to make phone calls from their cells during most hours of the day, as well as send and receive emails. Detainees are no longer limited by waiting in line to use a phone. In addition, families now have the ability to visit inmates from the comfort of their own homes by using internet visitation. Studies continually prove the more support detainees receive from friends and family while they are incarcerated, the less likely they are to recidivate. The Corrections Bureau is not only improving communication for our detainees, we are also implementing new and enhanced safety and security measures. By the end of the year the department will be installing two top of the line body scanners. This technology is sure to assist with lowering the rate of dangerous contraband brought into the facility to include drugs, weapons, and cellphones. Before the school year began the Corrections Bureau participated with Badges and Backpacks. This is an amazing event hosted by the Sheriff’s Department that provided over 2,000 kids in our community with new backpacks full of essential school supplies. In addition, we will be participating in similar community events such as Shop with a Cop, and Angel Tree. These programs focus on providing for underprivileged children over the holidays. The Corrections Bureau is excited and optimistic about the future, and continues to work to ensure that we are providing a safe, secure, and constitutional facility.
