On November 20, 2013, at approximately 7:30 a.m., San Xavier District deputies responded to the 7500 block of South Woodbury Grove Drive reference a suicidal person. When deputies arrived, they learned a male called 9-1-1 to report a suicide, when the call taker asked the caller who it was, the caller said “me” and disconnected the phone call. Friends of Marty Maiden II, a 20-year-old male also called 9-1-1 to report that Marty made suicidal comments on a Facebook post. Information developed that Marty was most likely armed with a firearm. Several attempts were made to make contact with Mr. Maiden, which were unsuccessful. The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team responded to the location and evacuations were made of the surrounding homes. At approximately 9:30 a.m., deputies made contact with Mr. Maiden outside of the residence. Mr. Maiden was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a shotgun and presented a threat to SWAT Team members. Deputy Caudillo subsequently fired one round at Mr. Maiden, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. No deputies were injured during the course of this event. Deputy Caudillo was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, which is standard procedure following an officer involved shooting. Deputy Caudillo is a twelve year veteran of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
