The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been awarded four (4) grants totaling $167,000 from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The Sheriff’s Department has a strong reputation with GOHS based upon a history of appropriately utilizing funds awarded within the grant guidelines. With this funding the Sheriff’s Department will continue DUI enforcement efforts, including high intensity saturation patrols and DUI sobriety checkpoints. Additionally, the funding will provide opportunities to increase public awareness about the dangers associated with underage drinking through activities such as Operation Safe Graduation. A portion of this grant will allow the Sheriff’s Department to purchase a motorcycle for the Motor Unit. Speed detection devices will also be purchased with funds from the grant. A portion of the funds have been designated for Occupant Protection. This will allow the department to host and/or participate in Car Seat Safety Check Events throughout the year, including National Child Passenger Safety Week. Occupant Protection also operates special deployments such as Click it or Ticket – Buckle up Arizona, which targets car seat/seatbelt use for children (and adults), with zero tolerance, and is enforced throughout the year. Click it or Ticket – Buckle Up Arizona is aimed at reducing the number of serious injury or fatality collisions involving unrestrained occupants in vehicles. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for their continued support as we share its mission to take impaired drivers off our roadways.
