On May 25, 2015, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the Mount Lemmon deputy responded to a rock climbing accident at Windy Point. When the deputy arrived, he learned a 32-year-old male fell approximately 40 feet landing on his back. The accident occurred when the rock failed that was anchoring his gear. The Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Unit, the Southern Arizona Rescue Association (SARA), the Mount Lemmon Fire Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue Unit, and Life Net responded to the incident location. Rescue units stabilized the victim before utilizing ropes to move him 25 feet up the slope to clear a tree canopy. Once clear of the trees, the DPS helicopter short hauled the victim 125 feet to a nearby landing zone at Geology Point. He was transferred to the Life Net helicopter and flown to the trauma center with non-life threatening injuries for treatment.
