On July 31, 2017, at approximately 7:10 p.m., deputies responded to the report of a shooting in the 13000 block of West Arivaca Road. Upon arrival, deputies located a man with a gunshot wound and immediately began to render aid. The victim was ultimately airlifted to a nearby trauma center. Deputies also made contact with the homeowner and alleged shooter, 71-year-old Michael Goodwin. The Night Detective Squad responded and took over the investigation. Detectives learned the victim is an undocumented immigrant and, prior to the shooting, there was a confrontation which occurred inside Mr. Goodwin’s residence or near his carport door. The victim fled from the residence and ran towards the property gate away from Mr. Goodwin. Multiple gunshots were fired toward the fleeing subject with one bullet striking him in the back. No arrests were made the night of the incident. Detectives presented the case to the Pima County Attorney's Office, who issued charges. On August 14, 2017, a Pima County Grand Jury indicted Mr. Goodwin on two (2) counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Mr. Goodwin was issued a summons and appeared in court on August 21, 2017. He was booked and released on his own recognizance pending future court proceedings.
