Sent on 8/21/2013 9:47:21 PM

On August 21, 2013, at approximately 4:18 p.m., San Xavier District deputies responded to the Sun Van facility located at 3401 East Ajo Way reference a shooting. When deputies arrived, they learned the victim was a Sun Van driver, who was on his way back to the facility. He told deputies as he approached the intersection of South Broadmont Drive and East Ajo Way, a truck stopped in front of him and two armed subjects got out. The Sun Van driver made an immediate left turn onto Broadmont headed towards the facility parking lot. As he pulled into the lot, the same vehicle stopped on the road behind him. The driver saw an armed subject get out of the truck and fire multiple shots toward the bus. After discharging his weapon, the subject got back into the truck and drove away. The driver was the only person in the bus and he was not injured. A witness in the area was able to get a good description of the suspect, the truck involved, and the license plate. Deputies immediately started a coordinated search and located the truck at a residence in the 3000 block of South Tower Way. Deputies detained four individuals at that location. The Night Detective Squad and the Robbery Assault Unit responded and took over the case. During the course of their investigation, they learned 27-year-old Lawrence Ortiz, was involved in the shooting. He was later transported to the Pima County Adult Detention Center and booked on the following charges: • Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon • Prohibited Possessor in Possession of a Deadly Weapon • Discharging a Firearm at a Non-Residential Structure Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
