The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been awarded four (4) grants totaling $114,930.00 from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). An additional $150,000.00 was also awarded from the DUI Abatement Council. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has a strong reputation with GOHS based upon a history of appropriately utilizing funds awarded within the grant guidelines. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has conducted many successful traffic safety operations and with this type of funding will continue DUI enforcement efforts including high intensity saturation patrols and DUI sobriety checkpoints. Additionally, the funding will provide opportunities to increase public awareness about the dangers associated with underage drinking through activities such as Operation Safe Graduation. A portion of this grant will allow the Sheriff’s Department to purchase an additional ten (10) Portable Breath Test (PBT) devices, allowing officers to more accurately identify juvenile alcohol offenses, determine intoxication levels, or identify the need to evaluate for drugs other than alcohol. The funds from the GOHS will also will be applied towards Occupant Protection and Car Seat Safety Check Events. Occupant Protection operations such as “Click it or Ticket – Buckle Up Arizona” and “National Child Passenger Safety Week” targets car seat/seatbelt use for children (and adults), with zero tolerance, and is enforced throughout the year. Click it or Ticket – Buckle Up Arizona is aimed at reducing the number of serious injury or fatality collisions involving unbelted occupants of vehicles. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the GOHS for their continued support of the Sheriff’s Department and its mission to take impaired drivers off our roadways.
