On September 24, 2012, at approximately 6:51 p.m., deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department San Xavier District responded to the intersection of Benson Highway and Drexel Road. The 9-1-1 call indicated that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, deputies found that 5 male pedestrians had crossed Benson Highway from West to East. While they were in the roadway on Benson Highway, a small sedan approached the intersection travelling southeast. The vehicle struck three of the five male pedestrians. At least one of them penetrated the car’s windshield. The three injured men were transported to University Medical Center by ambulances of Rural Metro Fire Department and Tucson Fire Department. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene and took over the investigation. One of the males, 15 years of age, suffered a fractured arm and a fractured leg. A 20 year old male suffered a closed head wound and will remain at UMC overnight for observation. The third male, also 20 years of age, suffered only minor injuries.
