On May 23, 2013, at approximately 9:30 pm, deputies working off duty at Mountain View High School responded within seconds of receiving reports of a traffic collision involving a car and two pedestrians. The deputies immediately started rendering first aid and Northwest Fire was requested. The collision occurred on Thornydale Rd. south of Linda Vista Blvd. A small red SUV was travelling northbound on Thornydale when it struck two individuals as they crossed the street. One of the individuals struck was later pronounced deceased at the hospital and has been identified as Dorothy Penrod, an 82-year-old female. The second person was transported to University of Arizona Medical Center and is currently in critical condition. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene and are investigating the collision. After speaking to the driver of the SUV, it was determined that he was travelling at 40-45 miles per hour and tried to stop before the impact. The area where the collision occurred was very dark and the pedestrians were not using a crosswalk. Alcohol was not a factor in this collision and the investigation continues.
