Detectives are releasing new details in the deputy involved shooting from Saturday, March 3, 2018. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that when deputies arrived on scene they were directed to a trailer on the property where 38-year-old Amanda Alvarez was last seen. As the deputies were clearing the trailer, Ms. Alvarez attacked them both utilizing Counter Assault® Bear Deterrent, a form of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray intended for use only on bears. Ms. Alvarez was shot following this attack. Ms. Alvarez had an extensive criminal history, including numerous contacts with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. At the time of the shooting, Ms. Alvarez had an active felony warrant out for her arrest. It was also discovered that the week prior to the shooting, she was involved in an attempted stabbing of a deputy using an arrow. This investigation is still ongoing.
