This morning, at approximately 10:30 a.m., a branch of US Bank located inside the Safeway store at 9777 N. Thornydale Road was robbed. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Foothills District responded to the store. Upon arrival, they also learned about a suspicious package the suspect had left behind. A note the robber had used in committing the robbery raised suspicions that the device might contain an explosive device. As a result the entire store was evacuated and the Pima Regional Bomb Squad was asked to respond to the scene. Detectives with the Sheriff’s Robbery/Assault Unit also responded and learned that a male suspect had approached the teller. He implied a gun and demanded money. He was handed an undisclosed amount of cash and then left the building, leaving behind the suspicious package. He was last seen on foot headed westbound from the store. The Pima Regional Bomb Squad investigated the package utilizing a robot. The package turned out to be a harmless item and did not contain any explosives. The suspect was described as either Caucasian or possibly Oriental with a beard. He is approximately 5’09” to 5’10” tall with a medium build. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a red University of Arizona baseball cap and a green military-style jacket. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
