On June 9, 2015, at approximately 9:30 PM, deputies with the Sheriff’s Rincon District responded to an Unknown Problem in the 13500 block of East Benson Highway in Vail. Upon arrival, they learned the homeowner had come home to find a fire burning inside his residence. He notified a neighbor and returned to his home. Inside he found the body of his long-term girlfriend and two of their dogs, also deceased. The Rincon Valley Fire Department responded to the scene, but found the fire already extinguished. Due to the circumstances, detectives with the Sheriff’s Arson and Homicide Units responded to the scene and took over the investigation. After concluding their on-scene assessment, the fire was deemed accidental. The body of the deceased woman, later identified as 49-year-old Darcel D. Lowe, was turned over to the Office of the Medical Examiner. Results of an autopsy are pending. Detectives did not find any obvious signs of foul play. The investigation continues.
