Zero Tolerance for Underage Drinking Parties

Sent on 4/28/2014 1:35:17 PM

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is taking a zero tolerance approach to underage drinking parties during the month of May, when an increase of graduation festivities is often seen. The Sheriff’s Department will be utilizing a proactive approach to detect and deter underage drinking parties. Search warrants can and will be obtained if the residents prove to be uncooperative. Underage drinkers and anyone who may be supplying the liquor will be arrested. Parents and/or guardians who allow underage drinking in their homes should be aware of “Social Host Laws.” If the Sheriff’s Department finds underage drinkers on your property, you will be arrested for a criminal “Social Host” charge; one charge for every person under the age of 21 who drank liquor on your property. Additionally, charges such as “Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor” can also be added, and it would be one charge for every person under the age of 21. Each charge could result in fines and even jail time. Most importantly, you could face felony charges if someone gets injured or killed on your property, or injures or kills someone after leaving your home. Please have a serious talk with your teen about alcohol, parties and family liability long before it is an issue. Avoid leaving teens home alone overnight. Social media can turn small gatherings into a large-scale party without your child even knowing it. Also, let your neighbors know when you leave town. The ultimate goal is to reduce injuries and deaths involving young teens who make poor decisions concerning alcohol.
